OBJECT:
A GROUP OF KANESATAKE MOHAWKS COME TO THE ASSISTANCE OF
SAINT-PLACIDE AND SAINT-ANDRÉ D’ARGENTEUIL RESIDENTS DURING LAST MARCH 8th AND 9th SNOW STORM OF THE CENTURY.
REFERENCE:
APRIL 8th 2008, STATUTORY COUNCIL MEETING.
Last march 8th, highway 344 was blocked by snow drifts between OKA and Saint-Placide, no cars could get by on that road. As a result, many vehicules were stuck and the senders of this letter were facing the danger and discomfort of spending the night in their cars. No security vehicules nor snow plows could get to us in these especialy difficult conditions.
It was then that a group of KANESATAKE MOHAWKS come to our rescue.
Mrs. Dolorès Taillon was beginning to suffer from hypothermia. We were all very cold and had no means to counteract this situation.
Mr. Guy Darren Cross and Mrs. Lisa Simon Cross tried, while helping other people on highway 344, to take us to a safe place in OKA. Impossible to get there, so back we went to KANESATAKE, where Tracy and Mandy Cross invited us to a meal, dry our clothes, finding the necessary medication for Mrs. Taillon, and having us stay the night in the comfort of their home.
Mr. Tracy Cross spoke of his part in the Canadian armed forces where he served for 17 years and had many medals and diplomas to show for his career, having served in Bosnia with general De Chastelin. His experience was highlighted by the efficiency with which this whole rescue operation was carried out.
We stayed at the Cross home until 10 a.m. Sunday morning when the road was reopened.
We wanted to repay the Cross’s for their kindness, but they wouldn’t have it. as Terry said “IT COMES FROM THE HEART”.
Another group, Simmons, also helped a Saint-Placide mand and his son in similar conditions.
We wish to stress publicly our appreciation and sincere gratitude to these wonderful people for their generosity, hospitality and sense of civic duty.
